JOINING THE CORPORATE COMMUNITY

Written By Isabella Hartwig

Making the jump from hospitality or retail into an office environment can feel like stepping into a completely different world. One day you’re rushing around on your feet for eight hours, chatting to customers and thinking on the spot. Next, you’re sitting at a desk, navigating Outlook calendars, Teams notifications, coffee runs and meeting invites. It’s a change, and if we’re being honest, it can feel a little intimidating. When I made that transition, I wish someone had handed me a simple guide. Not a corporate handbook full of policies, but the little things that nobody tells you. The habits that make office life easier, more enjoyable, and a lot less overwhelming.  After spending the past year and a half as a Studio Coordinator at Studio42, I’ve watched hundreds of people settle into office life. Whether it’s your first office job or you’re simply moving into a coworking environment, here are five things I wish I’d known from day one.

1. Your breaks are part of the job

If you’ve come from hospitality or retail, taking regular breaks can almost feel… wrong.

In customer-facing roles, you’re used to squeezing in lunch when you can and staying on your feet all day. Office work is different. Your body may be resting, but your brain certainly isn’t. Stepping away from your desk isn’t being unproductive, it’s one of the best things you can do for your focus. A quick walk around the block, grabbing a coffee, sitting outside for ten minutes or simply changing your surroundings helps reset your brain, reduces eye strain from screens and gets your body moving again. That’s one of the reasons Studio42 was designed with movement in mind. Between our two outdoor courtyards, shared kitchen spaces and offices across two levels, it’s easy to get up, move around and return feeling refreshed. Sometimes your best idea doesn’t happen at your desk, it happens while you’re making a coffee.

2. Don’t underestimate the common areas

It sounds simple, but saying “good morning” can change your day. Shared kitchens, breakout spaces and lounges aren’t just somewhere to eat lunch, they’re where conversations happen. You never know whether you’ll meet your next client, your next collaborator or simply someone who brightens your afternoon. At Studio42 we even have our Break Room Board (keep an eye on our blog for those!) which gives everyone something fun to chat about. Building connections doesn’t always happen in formal networking events. Sometimes it starts with someone asking, “How’s your day going?”

3. Create an opening… and a closing routine

One of the biggest things that helped me settle into office life was creating a routine.

Before diving straight into work each morning, take five minutes to prepare yourself. Put your lunch in the fridge, grab a complimentary coffee, fill up your water bottle, clean your glasses, check your calendar and write down a realistic to-do list. It sounds small, but these habits tell your brain it’s time to focus. Your afternoon routine matters just as much. Before leaving, close your laptop properly, tidy your workspace, wash your coffee cup, pack your bag and jot down tomorrow’s priorities. Walking into an organised workspace the next morning makes starting the day so much easier.

4. Go to the events

It can be tempting to pack up at 5:00 pm, head home and disappear into TikTok for the evening. Instead, stay for the event. Whether it’s networking drinks, themed celebrations or casual community catch-ups, these moments are where office spaces really come to life. You don’t need to stay all night, even an hour is enough to meet new people, learn about other businesses and build relationships that could help your career in the future. And if networking makes you nervous, don’t worry. Most people are there for exactly the same reason.

5. Give yourself a midday reset

This might be my favourite tip. Keep a small “reset bag” at work with the little things that make you feel fresh again, deodorant, perfume, lip balm, a hairbrush, moisturiser or anything else that helps you feel put together. Around lunchtime, take five minutes away from your desk. Freshen up, refill your water bottle, stretch your legs and mentally reset before tackling the afternoon. It’s amazing what five minutes can do for your confidence and energy levels. At Studio42, our end-of-trip facilities, showers and amenities make these little resets easy, helping you feel your best throughout the day.
